Chapter 9 - The Confession

A sickeningly familiar cologne filled my nostrils in the dark control room.
Julian leaned in close, his hot breath brushing against my ear.
He chuckled softly and whispered that I was incredibly stupid to think I could outsmart him.
He knew Vance would try to hack the presentation, so he had cut the main breaker himself.
Julian pressed the gun harder against my spine, forcing me to stand up.
He gloated about how easily he had manipulated everyone around him for years.
He proudly confessed that he had swapped Evelyn's heart medication with sugar pills.
He laughed as he described watching her slowly weaken day by day.
He told me that as soon as the panic in the ballroom cleared, he was going to throw me off the balcony.
He planned to tell the police that his deranged wife had committed suicide after a failed sabotage attempt.
I listened to his horrifying confession without shedding a single tear or begging for my life.
I simply stood there in the darkness, waiting for him to finish bragging.
When he finally stopped speaking, I let out a soft, mocking laugh.
Julian angrily demanded to know what I thought was so funny.
I reached into my pocket and pulled out my cell phone, the screen glowing brightly in the dark.
I showed him that I was currently on an active phone call.
I had dialed Vance's number the moment I entered the control room.
And Vance had connected his phone directly to the police department's emergency dispatch.
The backup generators of the hotel suddenly roared to life.
The lights blazed back on, blinding us both for a brief second.

Julian looked down at the ballroom floor in absolute horror.
Dozens of armed police officers had already surrounded the stage, and their weapons were pointed directly at the balcony.
