Chapter 1 - The Silver Key

The house was suffocatingly quiet after the phone call ended.
I stared at the black screen of my cell phone for a long time.
My husband was gone.
He was lost in the arms of another woman on a tropical island.
Meanwhile, I was standing in our cold living room with his mother's ashes.
I did not shed a single tear.
My grief had already been completely exhausted in the hospital room the night before.
I simply looked at the elegant white urn resting on the mantel.
Evelyn was finally at peace.
She had spent twenty years treating me better than her own son ever did.
I slowly opened my clenched hand.
The tiny silver key she had given me before her last breath caught the dim light of the room.
I knew this key was not just a sentimental keepsake.
Evelyn was a brilliant and calculating woman.
She knew exactly what Julian was doing behind my back.
I walked up the grand staircase to our master bedroom.
I packed a single duffel bag with only my most essential clothes.
I did not take any of the expensive jewelry Julian had bought me with his dirty money.
I took off my diamond wedding ring and placed it perfectly in the center of his mahogany nightstand.
Right next to the ring, I placed the divorce papers I had quietly drawn up weeks ago.
I zipped my bag and walked out the front door without looking back.
I disappeared into the rainy night, leaving no trace of where I was going.
Three days later, Julian finally returned from his luxurious Hawaiian getaway.
He walked into the silent house, calling my name with his usual irritated tone.
He found the urn, the ring, and the signed divorce papers.
He felt a sudden, terrifying panic grip his chest.
Julian rushed into his private study and threw open the painting that hid his wall safe.
He punched in the code with trembling fingers.
The heavy steel door swung open.
The safe was completely empty.
All of his offshore bank account ledgers and blackmail materials were gone.

In their place was a single, handwritten note with my handwriting.
The note simply said that I knew everything, and I was coming for him.
