Chapter 3 - The Hunter

I froze in the darkness, my heart pounding against my ribs.
I recognized the voice instantly.
It was Marcus, the ruthless head of security for Julian's company.
Julian must have realized the key was missing and sent his attack dog to intercept me.
I clutched the envelope tightly to my chest.
I knew Marcus was not afraid to hurt me to get what Julian wanted.
I quickly dropped to the floor and crawled under the steel table in the center of the room.
Marcus cursed loudly and fumbled for a flashlight.
A narrow beam of light swept across the vault, barely missing my face.
I noticed a small emergency ventilation hatch near the base of the back wall.
While Marcus searched the opposite corner, I slid the documents into my jacket.
I silently unscrewed the latch on the ventilation grate.
I squeezed my body through the narrow opening just as Marcus turned his flashlight toward me.
He yelled my name and lunged forward, but I was already crawling through the dusty shaft.
I emerged into a back alley behind the bank, gasping for fresh air.
I ran for three blocks until I lost myself in a crowded outdoor market.
I bought a cheap, used laptop from a shady pawn shop with the cash I had on hand.
I rented a dingy motel room on the edge of town and locked the deadbolt.
I sat on the sagging bed and plugged Evelyn's flash drive into the computer.
A video file popped up on the screen.
I clicked play, and Evelyn's pale, tired face appeared.
She looked directly into the camera and spoke with terrifying clarity.
She said Julian had been slowly poisoning her to accelerate his inheritance.
Tears streamed down my face as I listened to her painful confession.
Then, her expression turned dead serious.
She warned me that Julian had already taken out a massive life insurance policy on my life.
May you like
She said I was going to be his next victim.
Suddenly, the doorknob of my motel room began to rattle violently.
