Chapter 2 - The Hidden Truth

I sat on a rusty bench at the central train station, blending in with the morning commuters.

The silver key felt heavy in the pocket of my coat.

I remembered Evelyn mentioning a specific security vault at the oldest bank in the city.

She had told me to go there if anything ever happened to her.

I boarded a train heading directly into the financial district.

The rain beat steadily against the train window, masking the sound of my racing heart.

When I arrived at the bank, the teller looked at the key with wide eyes.

He immediately escorted me down a spiral staircase into the underground vault.

The air down here was cold and smelled of ancient paper.

I found the box matching the number engraved on the key.

I turned the lock, and the metal door clicked open smoothly.

Inside the box was a thick manila envelope and a small black flash drive.

I opened the envelope and pulled out a stack of legal documents.

My breath caught in my throat as I read the first page.

Julian was not the sole heir to Evelyn's massive corporate empire.

Evelyn had secretly transferred all of her voting shares and controlling interest to me.

She knew Julian was embezzling funds to pay off his massive gambling debts.

She also knew about his mistress, Sienna.

I realized with a shock that I was now the legal owner of a billion-dollar company.

I reached for the flash drive to see what else Evelyn had left me.

Suddenly, the heavy vault door slammed shut behind me.

The lights in the underground room flickered and died.

I was plunged into total darkness.

A cold, raspy voice echoed from the corner of the vault.

The voice told me to slowly hand over the envelope if I wanted to live.
