Chapter 5 - The Escape

Vance grabbed my arm and pulled me toward the kitchen doors.
He tossed a hundred-dollar bill onto the table to distract the waitress.
We pushed through the swinging doors just as the police officers entered the front of the diner.
The kitchen staff yelled at us, but Vance ignored them.
He shoved open the heavy metal exit door leading to the loading dock.
His sleek black sedan was parked in the alley, engine already running.
I dove into the passenger seat, clutching my bag to my chest.
Vance slammed the gas pedal, and the car shot out of the alley like a bullet.
We sped through the rainy streets, dodging traffic to lose the cops.
Once we were on the highway heading up into the mountains, I finally caught my breath.
I pulled the documents out of the envelope and showed them to Vance.
He read through the corporate transfers while steering with one hand.
A slow, impressed smile spread across Vance's face.
He told me Evelyn had executed a flawless corporate checkmate.
But then Vance noticed a secondary document tucked behind the will.
It was a background report on Julian's mistress, Sienna.
Vance read the file and let out a sharp gasp.
Sienna was not just a random young woman Julian had picked up.
She was the secret daughter of Richard Thorne, the most ruthless corporate raider in the country.
Julian and Sienna were planning to sell Evelyn's entire legacy to Thorne for pennies on the dollar.
They were going to strip the company for parts and destroy thousands of jobs.
I realized I had to stop the shareholder meeting scheduled for the next day.
Suddenly, Vance frantically pumped the brake pedal.
The pedal slammed uselessly all the way to the floorboard.

Vance looked at me with pure terror in his eyes.
Our car was hurtling toward a hairpin turn on the edge of a massive cliff, and we had no brakes.
