Chapter 6 - The Wreckage

Vance yanked the steering wheel hard to the right.

The car spun wildly out of control on the wet asphalt.

Instead of flying over the cliff, we slammed violently into the side of the mountain.

The airbags exploded in a cloud of white dust, knocking the breath out of my lungs.

The sound of crunching metal echoed through the empty canyon.

I sat there for a moment, ears ringing, trying to understand if I was still alive.

Vance groaned beside me and kicked his jammed door open.

He pulled me out of the smoking wreckage before the engine could catch fire.

We scrambled up the muddy embankment and hid in the dense pine trees.

Julian's mechanic must have tampered with Vance's car while we were in the diner.

They were not just trying to arrest me anymore.

They were actively trying to silence us forever.

We hiked for two hours through the freezing rain until we reached an old hunting cabin owned by Vance's family.

We broke the lock and built a small fire in the dusty hearth.

I sat wrapped in a blanket, shivering from the cold and the adrenaline.

I told Vance that hiding was no longer an option.

If I did not show up at the shareholder gala tomorrow, Julian would legally sell the company to Thorne.

I had to walk right into the lion's den and expose them all.

Vance agreed and started outlining a plan to bypass the heavy security at the hotel.

I took off my wet boots to warm my freezing feet by the fire.

As I held my right boot, I noticed the heel felt strangely loose.

I pried the rubber sole apart with a fire poker.

A tiny, blinking red light stared back at me from inside the shoe.

May you like

Julian had planted a GPS tracker on me before I even left the house.

And the blinking light meant his men were already surrounding the cabin.
