Chapter 9 - The Sweetest Victory

"Silence in the court!" the judge roared, banging his gavel repeatedly.
The bailiffs grabbed Brenda by her arms and forcefully dragged her out of the courtroom while she continued to scream incoherencies.
Andrew kept his head down, too ashamed to even look in my direction.
Gemma simply wept loudly, realizing that her greed had bought her a ten-year prison sentence.
I watched the doors swing shut behind them, feeling an immense, heavy burden lift completely off my shoulders.
Zachary wrapped his arm around my waist, pulling me into a warm, grounding embrace.
"It is over, Samantha," he whispered against my hair.

"You saved my daughter's life, and in return, you let me help you save your own," Zachary said, raising his glass.
"I think we make an incredible team."
I smiled, my heart fluttering in a way I had not felt since I was a teenager.
I leaned across the table and kissed him, a deep, passionate kiss that promised a beautiful new beginning for both of us.
For the first time in a very long time, I was genuinely, perfectly happy.
After dinner, Zachary drove me back to my apartment building.

We walked up to my front door, laughing and holding hands under the warm hallway lights.
But our laughter died instantly when we saw the small, black velvet box sitting directly on my welcome mat.
