Chapter 1 - The Unexpected Savior

I stared at Zachary, completely unable to process why the father of my six-year-old patient was standing at the doors of my ruined wedding.
He did not wait for my brain to catch up to reality.
He gently placed his warm suit jacket over my shivering, bare shoulders.
"My car is right out front," he said in a calm, steady voice.
I let him guide me away from the grand ballroom, leaving behind the whispers of my former friends and the cruel laughter of my mother-in-law.
We drove in silence for twenty minutes until he pulled into the parking lot of a quiet, empty diner.
He ordered two black coffees and slid a steaming mug across the table toward me.
"Paisley is going to make a full recovery, and it is entirely because of you," he finally said.
I stared down at my wrinkled wedding dress, the white fabric still stained with tiny drops of his daughter's blood.
"I just lost everything because I stayed in that operating room," I whispered, my voice breaking for the first time.
Zachary shook his head slowly, his eyes filled with a dark, intense sympathy.
"You didn't lose them because you were late, Samantha."
I looked up at him, my heart suddenly pounding against my ribs.
"What are you talking about?" I asked.
Zachary pulled out his phone and slid it across the diner table.
"I was in the hospital cafeteria at seven this morning, right after Paisley went into surgery."
"I saw your fiancé sitting in a booth with the woman in the white dress."
My breath caught in my throat as I looked at the photograph on the screen.
It was Andrew and Gemma, kissing over a pair of champagne flutes, four hours before my wedding was even supposed to begin.

But that was not the worst part.
Sitting on the table between them was a marriage certificate that already had a red, official county seal stamped on the bottom.
