Chapter 5 - The Secret Vault

Daniel and Grace formed a silent, unbreakable alliance in the shadows of the massive estate.
They communicated through coded notes left in the laundry room and brief whispers when Vanessa was asleep.
Daniel needed to access the hidden wall safe in his private study to secure his corporate ownership documents.
He knew Vanessa would never let him out of her sight for more than a few minutes.
"I will create a distraction," Grace promised him on a rainy Tuesday afternoon.
Vanessa was sitting in the living room, aggressively demanding that a wedding planner speed up the ceremony date.
Suddenly, a loud crash echoed from the formal dining room.
Grace began shouting frantically that a massive water pipe had burst behind the expensive silk wallpaper.
Vanessa immediately ran into the dining room to scream at the staff about the water damage.
Daniel used the chaos to slip quietly into his dark study and lock the heavy oak door.
He moved a large oil painting aside and rapidly spun the brass dial on his hidden wall safe.
The heavy steel door clicked open, revealing stacks of cash, emergency passports, and a thick leather folder.
Daniel pulled the folder out and opened it on his desk.
It was a private background check he had ordered on Vanessa before he proposed to her.
He had never actually read it, foolishly trusting the charming woman who made him laugh at a charity dinner.
He flipped through the glossy pages and felt his heart completely stop in his chest.
Vanessa Cole was not a wealthy socialite from a respected family.
She was currently five million dollars in debt to a violent, underground loan shark syndicate operating out of Chicago.
Her entire elegant persona was a carefully crafted lie designed to trap a billionaire who could pay off her lethal debts.
Daniel took pictures of the documents with his phone and carefully locked the safe again.
He stepped out of the study just as the front doorbell rang loudly through the mansion.
Grace hurried past Vanessa to open the heavy wooden doors.
A tall, dangerous-looking man in a sharp black suit was standing on the front porch.

He did not look like a wedding guest or a corporate executive.
He looked exactly like a professional killer.
