Chapter 3 - The Hidden Document

Daniel clenched his fists under the thin hospital blankets as he listened to his fiancée's betrayal.

She was trying to legally steal his billion-dollar commercial construction firm before he even recovered.

He stayed in the hospital for three agonizing days, playing the role of a confused and broken man.

When he was finally discharged, Vanessa brought him back to the sprawling Charlotte estate.

She treated him like a fragile child, constantly hovering over him and controlling who he could speak to.

Grace was waiting in the grand foyer when they arrived, her hands folded neatly in front of her gray uniform.

She offered Daniel a warm, genuine smile of relief that touched his cold heart.

"Welcome home, Mr. Whitfield," Grace said softly.

Vanessa quickly stepped between them and glared at the maid.

"Mr. Whitfield needs absolute quiet, Grace," Vanessa snapped with cruel authority.

"Do not speak to him unless I explicitly permit it."

Daniel shuffled slowly toward the living room, leaning heavily on a wooden cane to sell his performance.

He pretended to stumble on the thick Persian rug, dropping a crystal water glass from the table.

Before the glass could shatter on the floor, Daniel’s reflexes kicked in flawlessly.

He caught the heavy crystal in mid-air with lightning speed and perfect coordination.

He quickly placed the glass on the table and looked up to see if anyone had noticed.

Grace was standing in the doorway, staring directly at his perfectly steady hand.

She narrowed her intelligent eyes, instantly realizing that his severe brain damage was a complete lie.

Daniel put his finger to his lips, begging her silently to keep his dangerous secret.

Grace gave a tiny, almost imperceptible nod of agreement.

Later that evening, Vanessa left the mansion to attend a luxury spa appointment.

Daniel immediately abandoned his cane and walked swiftly into his private home office.

Grace followed him inside a few minutes later, holding a crumpled piece of paper she had found in the kitchen trash.

"You need to see this," Grace said, her voice shaking with genuine fear.

She placed the torn document onto his heavy mahogany desk.

Daniel smoothed the wrinkled paper out and read the fine print.

It was a confirmation letter from his private wealth management firm.

And the policy contained a specific clause that paid out immediately in the event of an accidental death.
