Chapter 7 - The True Identity

The entire apartment went completely silent.

Graham stared at me, his eyes wide with absolute shock and betrayal.

I did not panic, because I had spent the last five years preparing for this exact terrifying moment.

I slowly backed away from the officers, keeping my hands raised where they could clearly see them.

“My name is Emily,” I stated firmly.

The lead officer shook his head and unclipped his radio.

“You stole a dead woman's social security number to create a new life in Boston,” the officer countered.

Graham looked incredibly lost, struggling to reconcile the woman he loved with a wanted fugitive.

“Emily, what are they talking about?” he pleaded.

I ignored his desperate question and focused entirely on the police.

“I want to use my phone to call my attorney,” I demanded.

The officer nodded slowly, gesturing for me to retrieve my device carefully.

I used my newly funded bank account to send an encrypted emergency SOS to the most ruthless defense attorney in the country.

I did not have to wait long for the cavalry to arrive.

Within fifteen minutes, my high-powered lawyer confidently walked through the apartment doors carrying a steel briefcase.

He bypassed Graham entirely and handed the lead police officer a stack of highly classified documents.

“My client’s identity was legally changed and sealed by a federal judge,” the lawyer stated.

“She is under federal witness protection, and her maternity regarding these children is absolutely unquestionable.”

The police officer scanned the federal documents, his face turning slightly pale.

The lawyer then handed the police the crystal-clear audio recording I had secretly made of Victoria blackmailing Graham.

The police immediately backed off, apologizing profusely for the severe intrusion.

The CPS agent practically ripped up the forged surrogate documents and left the apartment in absolute shame.

My lawyer made a quick phone call, and within minutes, the police dispatched a unit to the Grand Hotel.

Victoria was violently arrested in her penthouse for extortion, fraud, and filing a false police report.

Graham pulled me into a fierce, desperate embrace as the police cleared out of our safehouse.

“It is finally over,” Graham whispered into my hair.

“We are going to be a real family, and I will never let anyone hurt you again.”

I hugged him back tightly, tears of genuine joy streaming down my face.

We had actually won the war.

I walked into the master bathroom to splash cold water on my exhausted, tear-stained face.

As I reached for a fresh towel, I noticed a cheap black burner phone sitting in the bottom of my diaper bag.

It was not my phone, and it was not Graham's phone.

It began to vibrate aggressively against the counter.

I picked it up with trembling fingers and pressed the strange device to my ear.

“Graham didn't abandon you eighteen months ago because he was scared of being a father,” a dark, chilling voice whispered.

“He left because he was desperately trying to protect you from me.”

“And now that you have brought his heirs into the public spotlight, I know exactly where to find them.”
