Chapter 6 - The Legal Trap

I backed away from the door, my hands shaking violently.
The heavy pounding grew louder, shaking the wooden frame.
I checked the security monitor, expecting to see Graham finally returning for us.
Instead, the glowing screen showed four armed police officers standing in the hallway.
Standing directly behind them was a stern agent from Child Protective Services.
The police officers began shouting aggressively through the heavy steel door.
“Open the door immediately, or we will breach the locks!” a male voice commanded.
I unlocked the deadbolt, knowing they would easily break it down anyway.
The officers swarmed into the apartment, instantly blocking my path to the bedroom where my children were sleeping.
The CPS agent stepped forward, tapping a pen against her clipboard.
“Emily Hart, you are being officially investigated for child endangerment and kidnapping,” she announced.
“Victoria Whitaker filed a formal report stating you stole her genetic children after serving as her paid surrogate.”
I screamed in deep frustration, begging them to realize Victoria was lying.
“I gave birth to them, they are mine!” I yelled.
The agent shook her head dismissively and held up a forged medical document.
It featured my forged signature directly beneath a surrogacy agreement.
Suddenly, the private elevator doors opened in the hallway.
Graham sprinted into the room, stepping firmly between me and the armed police officers.
“This is a massive misunderstanding, these are her biological children,” Graham declared.
The lead police officer looked at Graham, completely unimpressed by his wealth and societal status.
The officer looked down at a thick manila file in his hands and turned his attention back to me.
“We know Victoria fabricated the surrogate story to manipulate the system,” the officer stated calmly.
Graham let out a massive sigh of relief, thinking we were finally saved.
But the officer abruptly pulled out a pair of heavy steel handcuffs.

“We are not here because of Victoria Whitaker,” the officer continued.
“We are here because Emily Hart died in a fatal car crash five years ago, and we need to know your real identity.”
