Chapter 8 - The Standoff

Liam spun around, aiming the pistol directly into the dark corners of the warehouse.
Eleanor stepped gracefully out of the shadows, wearing a pristine white suit.
She was completely unharmed, holding a small digital remote control in her right hand.
"I always knew Arthur was incredibly incompetent," she said, looking down at the unconscious lawyer.
"You are supposed to be dead," Liam growled, keeping the gun trained on her heart.
"Death is a very expensive luxury that I easily afforded," she laughed softly.
She held up the small black remote for Liam to see clearly.
"This controls four pounds of plastic explosives wired to the chair Sarah is sitting in," Eleanor stated calmly.
Liam's blood ran cold, and he slowly lowered the pistol.
"Drop the gun, Liam, or I press this button right now," she commanded.
Liam tossed the gun into the darkness, raising his hands in defeat.
"Please, just let Sarah go," Liam begged, his voice cracking with emotion.
"I will never tell anyone about the money or your faked death."
Eleanor sighed dramatically, acting as if she were deeply disappointed in him.
"You always were incredibly naive, my sweet boy," she mocked.
"I cannot leave any loose ends, especially not the rightful heir."
Eleanor placed her thumb directly over the red detonation button.
Suddenly, a deafening crash echoed as an armored SWAT vehicle smashed through the warehouse doors.
Dozens of heavily armed officers flooded the building, aiming laser sights at Eleanor.
"Drop the remote!" the tactical commander screamed through a megaphone.
Eleanor panicked, her eyes darting wildly around the room as the lasers covered her chest.
She realized she was completely surrounded with absolutely no chance of escape.
Instead of dropping the remote, she smiled wickedly at Liam.
"If I cannot have the fortune, nobody will," she hissed venomously.
She violently slammed her thumb down onto the red button.
May you like
Liam screamed and threw his body over Sarah to shield her from the blast.
Nothing happened.
