Chapter 5 - The Resurrection

Liam aggressively pulled his truck onto the shoulder of the highway.
He stared at the digital news alert on his screen in absolute shock.
The article claimed that Eleanor's jet went down due to catastrophic engine failure.
There were supposedly no survivors recovered from the icy waters of the Atlantic.
Liam slammed his hands against the steering wheel in pure frustration.
If his mother was dead, she had escaped justice entirely.
More importantly, she took the secrets of his son's CPS case to the grave.
He merged back into traffic and drove straight to the police precinct anyway.
He sprinted inside and slammed the bag of evidence onto the front desk.
He demanded to see the lead detective assigned to his wife's assault case.
The detective walked out from the back, looking visibly exhausted.
Liam shoved the laptop forward and played the hidden camera footage.
The detective watched in stunned silence as Eleanor planted the forged documents.
"This completely exonerates your wife, Liam," the detective finally said.
"I will call the district judge and have the emergency custody order revoked immediately."
Liam felt a massive weight lift off his chest for the first time in days.
He thanked the detective and rushed out to drive back to the hospital.
He could not wait to tell Sarah that they were getting Leo back today.
He ran through the hospital lobby and took the elevator up to the ICU.
He burst into Sarah's recovery room with a massive smile on his face.
The smile instantly vanished.
The hospital bed was completely empty, and the sheets were violently torn.
The heavy IV machine was knocked over, spilling fluids all across the floor.
Liam screamed for the nurses, his heart pounding in his throat.
A terrified young nurse ran into the room and gasped at the mess.
"Where is my wife?" Liam demanded, grabbing the nurse by her shoulders.
"She was transferred an hour ago by her private doctor," the nurse stammered.
"We do not have a private doctor!" Liam roared in sheer panic.
He looked down at the floor and saw a small, muddy footprint near the bed.

It was the distinct shape of a designer heel.
Eleanor was not dead.
