Chapter 9 - The Fall of the House of Reynolds

"FBI SWAT, drop the weapon immediately!" a booming voice echoed from a megaphone outside.

Marcus looked out the shattered front window and saw dozens of heavily armored federal snipers aiming directly at him.

The gun instantly slipped from his trembling fingers and clattered loudly onto the hardwood floor.

David rushed forward immediately, kicking the weapon far across the room.

Two state troopers forcefully grabbed Marcus, slamming him face-first against the nearest wall to handcuff him.

Ashley quickly checked Richard’s pulse on the floor before securing his wrists with heavy steel zip-ties.

The front lawn was completely swarming with flashing red and blue police lights.

The corrupt Chief Miller was forcefully dragged out the back door in tight handcuffs by federal agents.

I knelt down behind the heavy dining table and wrapped my arms entirely around my four crying children.

"It is completely over, you are all perfectly safe now," I whispered, kissing their foreheads repeatedly.

David holstered his weapon and knelt down right beside us, wrapping his strong arms around our entire family.

"I am so incredibly proud of how brave you all were today," David told the children warmly.

Noah wiped his tears and looked directly at David with a small, hopeful smile.

"Can we go home to Texas now, Dad?" Noah asked softly.

My heart swelled with absolute, unconditional love for the beautiful family we had built together.

We walked slowly out the front door, stepping carefully over the broken glass and shattered security shutters.

The harsh Colorado snow had finally stopped falling, leaving a bright, peaceful white blanket over the mountain.

As we walked toward the waiting helicopter, Marcus was aggressively dragged out onto the porch by the FBI.

He looked at me with an expression of pure, absolute defeat.

"I really lost everything today, didn't I?" Marcus asked bitterly into the cold air.

I stopped walking and looked back at him one final, definitive time.

May you like

"You lost us eight years ago, Marcus, today you just finally lost your illusions," I replied coldly.

I turned my back on him completely and stepped up into the warm, safe cabin of the helicopter.
