Chapter 3 - The Hostile House

The sudden metallic crash of the security shutters made my daughters scream in terror.
I quickly pulled all four of my children behind me, shielding them with my own body.
"Open these doors right now, Richard, or I will call the police," I warned him fiercely.
Richard let out a dark, booming laugh that echoed off the high ceiling.
"I own the local police chief, Kesha, he is literally drinking eggnog in my kitchen right now," Richard mocked.
Chief Miller casually strolled out of the kitchen, holding a crystal glass and looking completely unbothered.
"Trespassing is a serious crime, Ms. Davis, especially when you land an unauthorized aircraft on private property," the Chief threatened.
Marcus finally stood up from the floor, looking completely lost and broken.
"Dad, stop this right now, you are terrifying the children," Marcus pleaded weakly.
"Shut up, you pathetic coward," Richard snapped at his own son.
"You proved you were utterly useless when you failed to secure our legacy, so I am taking over now."
Richard walked toward me with a terrifying, predatory smile on his face.
"I will have Chief Miller arrest you for child endangerment, and I will take full legal custody of my grandsons," Richard explained calmly.
"You can keep the girls, they are completely useless to the corporate trust fund anyway," Patricia added cruelly.
My blood boiled with a mother's fierce, protective rage.
They truly believed they still held all the power in this room.
They thought I was just a defenseless single mother who had somehow managed to rent a helicopter.
"You clearly haven't Googled my name in the last eight years, Richard," I said, a slow smile spreading across my face.
Richard frowned deeply, looking confused by my absolute lack of fear.
I reached into my designer purse and pulled out a heavy, encrypted satellite phone.
"Chief Miller, you might want to put your drink down before my pilot walks through that front door," I suggested.
The Chief scoffed, taking another arrogant sip of his expensive liquor.
Suddenly, a massive explosive charge blew the steel security shutters entirely off their hinges.
The heavy front doors were violently kicked open, letting the freezing snow swirl into the foyer.

Standing in the doorway was a tall, incredibly handsome man wearing a tactical winter jacket.
It was David, my fiancé, and the current Attorney General of the State of Texas.
