Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Betrayal

"Marcus, what the hell are you doing?" Ashley yelled, raising her own weapon.
Marcus completely ignored the undercover agent, keeping his dark eyes locked entirely on me.
"If my dad goes down for murder, the government will seize the entire family trust," Marcus realized out loud.
"I will be completely broke, totally ruined, and completely alone."
He stepped closer to me, his hands shaking slightly, but his grip on the gun remaining firm.
"Sign the quadruplets over to me right now, Kesha," Marcus demanded desperately.
"If I have primary custody, the courts will legally transfer a portion of the estate to them before the feds can seize it."
I stared at the man I had once loved, realizing there was absolutely no soul left inside him.
He was actually willing to threaten the mother of his children just to save his own bank account.
"You really think a judge will give you custody after you held us at gunpoint?" David asked, trying to stall for time.
"I will just say I was protecting them from my insane father," Marcus lied smoothly.
I looked at Marcus and let out a cold, highly condescending laugh.
"You are pointing a gun at me for absolutely nothing, Marcus," I told him calmly.
Marcus frowned deeply, clearly confused by my sudden amusement.
"What exactly are you talking about?" he demanded fiercely.
"Your mother didn't just drain the five million dollars to pay off a gambling debt," I revealed softly.
I looked directly at Patricia, who was currently weeping loudly in the corner of the room.
"Tell him the truth about the offshore accounts, Patricia," I commanded her.
Patricia looked up, her mascara running completely down her tear-stained face.
"The trust fund has been completely empty for three years, Marcus," Patricia sobbed uncontrollably.
"We heavily mortgaged this house, and we are currently fifty million dollars in debt."
Marcus stared at his mother in absolute, utter disbelief.

He slowly lowered the heavy gun, realizing he was fighting to inherit a massive pile of worthless dirt.
At that exact second, a red laser sight appeared perfectly in the center of Marcus's forehead.
