Chapter 8 - The Signature of Doom

Elara woke to the sickeningly familiar smell of heavy perfume and expensive champagne.
She was sitting in her golden wheelchair, completely paralyzed from the neck down once again.
She was positioned at the head of a massive banquet table in the grand ballroom of the Vance estate.
Hundreds of elite guests were laughing and drinking, entirely oblivious to the nightmare unfolding before them.
It was her eighteenth birthday gala, a grand spectacle designed to mask the ultimate theft of her life.
Her father stood beside her, beaming with the fake, polished pride of a loving parent.
He leaned down, whispering directly into her ear so none of the guests could hear his venom.
Smile for the cameras, my sweet girl, or I will have the boy skinned alive in the courtyard.
Elara’s eyes flicked desperately toward the massive floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the rear gardens.
The boy was tied heavily to a stone pillar, bruised and bleeding, surrounded by three vicious guard dogs.
The father signaled the orchestra to stop playing, commanding the absolute attention of the ballroom.
Ladies and gentlemen, today my beautiful daughter takes her rightful place as the sole heir of this massive empire.
A lawyer in a gray suit approached the table, placing a thick stack of legal documents on Elara’s tray.
Because of her tragic condition, she has legally authorized me to retain permanent control of the company assets.
The father placed a heavy gold fountain pen into Elara’s entirely numb, unresponsive hand.
He gripped her fingers with his own, preparing to force her hand to sign the ultimate surrender.
Elara closed her eyes, tears of absolute defeat sliding silently down her powdered cheeks.
She felt the cold gold of the pen pressing firmly against the pristine white paper.
Suddenly, a massive, unnatural vibration violently shook the crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling.
The champagne flutes on the table rattled aggressively, spilling expensive wine across the white silk tablecloths.
Outside in the courtyard, the boy’s eyes snapped open, glowing with a terrifying, blinding green light.
The thick ropes binding him to the stone pillar instantly snapped into a hundred frayed pieces.
The three vicious guard dogs did not attack him, but instead sat perfectly still, staring at him with absolute reverence.
The boy placed his hands flat against the exterior stone wall of the grand manor.

A massive pulse of raw, kinetic energy blasted through the foundation, instantly short-circuiting every electronic lock in the building.
The massive bronze doors of the ballroom blasted open, and a terrifying silence fell over the elite crowd.
