HE HORSE WASN'T THE MONSTER / Chapter 1 / 20

Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage

The sunlight glinted violently off the crystal champagne flutes scattered across the manicured lawns of the Vance estate.

Elara sat motionless in her custom wheelchair, a fragile porcelain doll displayed for the ruthless elite of high society.

Her father stood beside her in a razor-sharp tuxedo, radiating absolute power and control over the sprawling empire.

He was raising a glass to toast his own brilliance when the silence was shattered by a deafening scream.

Ghost, the estate’s prized white stallion, crashed through the pristine wooden fences of the exhibition ring.

The massive beast reared up on its hind legs, its eyes rolling in terror as it charged blindly toward the terrified crowd.

Wealthy guests shrieked and scrambled, knocking over tables in a desperate bid to escape the trampling hooves.

Elara could not run, her useless legs anchoring her to the inevitable path of the panicked animal.

Her father did not reach for her, but instead roared at his armed security guards to shoot the million-dollar horse.

Before a single weapon could be drawn, a ragged boy darted out from the shadow of the stables.

He was completely barefoot, his clothes stained with the deep, rich dust of the earth.

He did not flinch or cower, but ran directly into the path of the towering, screaming beast.

With impossible grace, the boy grabbed the heavy leather reins, whispering something ancient and soothing into the horse’s ear.

Ghost instantly dropped to all fours, his massive chest heaving as the wild terror melted from his dark eyes.

Elara exhaled a shaky breath, staring at the mysterious boy who had just saved her life.

Her father’s face twisted into an ugly mask of pure, unadulterated rage.

Let go of that horse right now, you filthy rat.

He stormed forward, his polished shoes crunching over the broken glass of the ruined gala.

You are ruining this house and humiliating me in front of my investors.

With a violent, brutal shove, the father threw the boy backward onto the hard stone patio.

The boy tumbled, and his bare, dirt-stained foot brushed roughly against Elara’s cold, lifeless leg.

A sharp, electric spark snapped through the air, completely invisible but impossible to ignore.

A violent jolt of searing heat shot upward from Elara’s ankle, tearing through nerves that had been dead for ten years.

Her eyes widened in absolute shock as warm tears suddenly spilled down her pale cheeks.

She looked down at her foot, watching in disbelief as her big toe twitched for the very first time.

Her father grabbed the boy by the collar, signaling the armed guards to drag him away to the underground cellar.

Take this trash out of my sight before I kill him myself.

Elara tried to scream for them to stop, but her vocal cords paralyzed in fear.

As the guards dragged him away, the boy locked his piercing green eyes with hers.

May you like

He mouthed three words that made Elara’s newly awakened blood run ice cold.

You can walk.
