Chapter 9 - The Final Stand

The precision shot from the FBI sniper outside did not hit Vanessa.
It struck the metal railing right next to her hand, sending a shower of sparks into her face.
Vanessa screamed and flinched backward, completely dropping the knife.
Adrian moved with blinding speed.
He sprinted up the metal stairs, tackling Vanessa to the steel grate floor before she could recover her weapon.
He pinned her arms behind her back, his knee pressing heavily into her spine.
Lily scrambled away from the scuffle, crying uncontrollably as she ran down the stairs.
An FBI agent caught the little girl at the bottom, shielding her with his body and carrying her to safety.
Vanessa thrashed wildly beneath Adrian, spitting curses and screaming that she would ruin him.
"You already tried," Adrian whispered coldly in her ear. "And you failed."
Two SWAT agents rushed up the stairs, pulling Vanessa off the floor and slapping heavy steel handcuffs onto her wrists.
Down below, Julian was also in handcuffs, being dragged out of the warehouse by federal agents.
Julian glared up at Adrian with pure hatred in his eyes.
"This isn't over, little brother!" Julian shouted as he was pushed into the back of an armored police vehicle.
Adrian walked slowly down the stairs, every muscle in his body aching from the violent adrenaline crash.
He walked past the fallen blast doors and out into the cool morning air.
The harbor was swarming with flashing red and blue police lights, securing the massive crime scene.
A paramedic guided Adrian to the back of an ambulance where Lily was sitting wrapped in a warm foil blanket.
The little girl looked up, her tear-stained face breaking into a massive, relieved smile.
"Daddy!" she cried out, jumping into his arms.
Adrian held her tightly, burying his face in her hair and crying for the first time in years.
Another agent walked over, carrying a car seat with a perfectly healthy, sleeping baby Noah inside.
The poison had been completely flushed from his system, and the tracking chip was gone.
Adrian looked at his two beautiful children, knowing the war was finally over.

He had faced the darkest parts of his own family and protected the people he loved most.
For the first time since this nightmare began, Adrian felt truly at peace.
