Chapter 5 - The Phantom Conspiracy
Adrian stared at the tiny, metallic chip resting in the doctor's gloved palm.
The realization hit him like a freight train crashing through his chest.
Vanessa wasn't just a greedy woman trying to steal his fortune.
She was part of a highly organized, heavily funded operation that had been tracking his family for months.
Adrian immediately grabbed Lily's hand and asked the doctor to quickly check her for a chip as well.
The doctor ran a specialized scanner over the little girl's arms and neck, but thankfully found nothing.
"You need to call the authorities right now," the doctor advised.
Adrian shook his head, knowing the fake police officer from his driveway proved the local department was already compromised.
He thanked the doctor, picked up his recovering baby boy, and quietly slipped out through the hospital's delivery exit.
He stole a beat-up pickup truck from the hospital parking lot, leaving a stack of hundred-dollar bills on the driver's seat as an apology.
They drove to a cheap roadside motel on the outskirts of the city where no one would recognize them.
Adrian sat on the edge of the sagging bed and pulled out a prepaid burner phone he kept in his emergency bag.
He dialed the number of Marcus, an old military buddy who now ran an elite private investigation firm.
"Marcus, I need you to run a deep background check on my wife, Vanessa," Adrian whispered into the phone.
He gave his friend every detail about the doghouse, the poison, the fake cop, and the microchip.
Marcus typed furiously on his end of the line for several tense minutes.
The silence grew heavy in the dark motel room as Adrian watched his children finally sleep.
"Adrian, you need to sit down," Marcus finally said, his voice laced with genuine shock.
"The woman living in your house is not named Vanessa."
Marcus explained that her real name was Elena Rostova, and she was an internationally wanted corporate spy.
But that wasn't even the most terrifying part of the discovery.
"According to these classified federal records, she has been legally married for five years," Marcus revealed.
"She is currently married to your older brother, Julian."

Adrian dropped the phone onto the floor as the blood roared in his ears.
His brother Julian had supposedly died in a tragic boating accident seven years ago.
