Chapter 2 - The Poisoned Glass

The silence in the living room became completely suffocating.
Adrian stared at the frozen image of the strange man handing over the vial.
His mind raced back to the dinner they had shared just thirty minutes before he discovered the children.
Vanessa had insisted on pouring him a glass of his favorite red wine.
He had only taken two sips before Lily's cries from the backyard had distracted him.
Adrian immediately looked at the half-empty crystal wine glass resting on the dining table.
"Who is that man, Vanessa?" Adrian asked, his voice dangerously calm.
Vanessa pressed her back against the front door, desperately searching for an excuse.
She claimed it was just a strange delivery driver who had dropped off a sample of cleaning supplies.
Adrian slowly pulled his cell phone from his pocket and locked every smart door in the mansion with a single tap.
The heavy deadbolts clicked shut in perfect unison, trapping her inside with him.
"You are lying to me," he stated coldly.
He walked over to the dining table and picked up the wine glass, swirling the dark red liquid.
He told her that he was going to call the police and have the wine tested for toxins.
Vanessa suddenly lunged forward, trying to slap the glass out of his hand, but Adrian easily stepped out of the way.
The glass shattered against the marble floor, spilling the ruined evidence everywhere.
Vanessa let out a breath of relief, thinking she had just destroyed the only proof of her crime.
But her relief was instantly shattered by a tiny, trembling voice coming from the hallway.
Lily was standing there, clutching her baby brother tightly against her chest.

"Daddy, she didn't put the medicine in your drink," the little girl whispered fearfully.
"She made Noah drink it right before she locked us outside."
