Chapter 9 - The Checkmate

Walter froze, the heavy brass paperweight hovering dangerously in the air.

He scrambled to grab the television remote from Marcus's desk and frantically turned on the news channel.

The breaking news banner flashing across the bottom of the screen was impossible to ignore.

The anchor was currently playing the crystal-clear audio of Nathan proudly confessing to massive charity fraud.

I had sent the encrypted files to three major investigative journalists the moment I left the police station.

Walter’s face turned an unhealthy shade of purple as he clutched his chest in genuine panic.

He realized that his entire family legacy was completely and permanently destroyed on a national level.

Marcus backed away from the desk, desperately trying to claim he had no idea what Walter was planning.

I pulled a secondary burner phone from my coat pocket and dialed 911.

I calmly reported to the dispatcher that a corrupt lawyer and an organized crime fixer were currently in the building.

The police sirens began wailing in the distance within mere minutes.

Walter stumbled backward and collapsed into a chair, his breathing shallow and rapid.

He begged me to call an ambulance, claiming his heart was finally failing for real this time.

I looked at the man who had ordered a hitman to execute me just an hour ago.

I told him I would be happy to call an ambulance for him.

But first, I needed him to legally sign over the deed to his multi-million dollar family estate.

I pulled a prepared legal contract from my jacket and placed a pen in his trembling hand.

Walter glared at me with pure hatred, but the excruciating pain in his chest gave him no choice.

He hastily signed the document, effectively transferring his entire fortune directly into my name.

I smiled warmly, took the contract, and immediately dialed for the paramedics.

But as I walked out of the office, I heard Marcus make one final, desperate phone call.
