Chapter 2 - The Empty Vault

I stared at the glaring zero on my screen, my heart pounding against my bruised ribs.

I had earned every single penny of that two million dollars through my software company.

Nathan was just a freelance consultant who barely made enough to cover his own golf club memberships.

I immediately called the emergency fraud line at my bank.

The customer service agent sounded nervous when she pulled up my file.

She explained that the transfer was authorized using my exact voice biometric password.

I realized with absolute disgust that Nathan had recorded my voice during private phone calls to piece together the authorization phrase.

I threw my phone onto the passenger seat and drove straight to the downtown police precinct.

I needed to file a domestic assault report and officially document the financial theft.

When I walked up to the front desk, the duty sergeant looked at my bruised face and sighed.

He did not offer me a seat or ask if I needed medical attention.

Instead, he pulled a thick manila envelope from beneath his desk and slid it toward me.

He told me that I was being officially served with an emergency restraining order.

I opened the envelope with trembling fingers and read the sworn affidavit.

Nathan had just filed a police report claiming that I was violently mentally unstable and had brutally attacked his elderly parents.

The document also stated that I was legally evicted from my own home, effective immediately.
