Chapter 8 - The Betrayal

I froze in the doorway, staring in pure shock at my high-powered lawyer and my supposed father-in-law.

Walter took a slow sip of his whiskey and offered me a chilling, grandfatherly smile.

He commended me on surviving the car crash, noting that I was much tougher than he originally thought.

I looked at Marcus, demanding to know why he was having drinks with the man who just tried to have me killed.

Marcus avoided my gaze, nervously adjusting his expensive silk tie.

He apologized quietly, explaining that Walter had just offered him a partnership at a massive international firm.

Marcus was completely selling me out for a massive promotion and a seven-figure signing bonus.

Walter stood up and slowly walked toward me, holding out his weathered hand.

He demanded that I give him the phone containing the audio recordings of Nathan's confession.

If I handed over the evidence, he promised to let me walk away with my life and my company.

If I refused, he assured me that the next hitman would not miss.

I looked down at the phone in my hand, feeling the immense weight of the situation crushing me.

I was completely alone, betrayed by the only legal protection I thought I had.

I slowly extended my arm and dropped the phone directly into Walter's waiting hand.

Walter laughed triumphantly, praising me for finally learning my proper place in the family hierarchy.

He placed the phone on the heavy wooden desk and raised a heavy brass paperweight to smash it.

I casually leaned against the doorframe and crossed my arms over my chest.

I calmly told Walter that he was welcome to smash the phone to tiny pieces.

I explained that I had never actually kept the original audio files on that specific device.

The real evidence was already being broadcasted live on the national evening news.
