Chapter 8 - The Forgery

The recording clicked off, leaving a suffocating, terrifying silence in its wake.

I stared at Ethan, completely astounded by the brilliant, brave young man he had become.

He had known about their treacherous plot the entire time and had waited for the perfect moment to spring his trap.

Clara’s face turned bright red, and she nervously began backing away toward the heavy oak doors.

"This is illegal!" Richard screamed, his voice cracking with sheer panic.

"You can't record my private phone calls without my consent, that won't hold up in court!"

Mr. Sterling, who had remained quietly observant in the corner, finally stepped forward again.

"Actually, Richard, Illinois is a one-party consent state when the recording involves evidence of extortion," Mr. Sterling corrected him sharply.

"And as the CEO of a major financial firm, I have my corporate lawyers on speed dial to verify that exact fact."

Richard looked wildly around the room, realizing that every single exit was conceptually blocked by his own lies.

He had called the police to arrest me, but he had merely invited them to witness his own absolute downfall.

The distant wail of police sirens began to echo through the city streets, growing louder by the second.

Clara suddenly panicked and made a desperate run for the door, abandoning her fake maternal act entirely.

Before she could reach the handle, two large security guards employed by the restaurant stepped in to forcefully block her path.

"Get out of my way!" Clara shrieked, kicking wildly at the stoic guards.

"I didn't do anything wrong, it was all his stupid idea!" she yelled, pointing directly at Richard.

Richard snarled like a cornered animal, his pristine, wealthy exterior completely shattered.

He looked at the digital recorder on the table, then at Ethan, and finally at me.

His eyes were wide, bloodshot, and filled with a dangerous, unpredictable madness.

"You ruined everything, Margaret!" Richard roared, finally losing the last shred of his sanity.

"You were supposed to just be the quiet, obedient wife who raised my mess!"

He lunged forward, grabbing a heavy, serrated steak knife from the center of the dining table.

Several guests screamed in pure terror as Richard charged directly toward me with the blade raised high.

I froze in shock, unable to process that the man I had lived with for twenty years was actually trying to kill me.

I closed my eyes tightly and braced myself for a fatal impact that never came.

A loud, sickening crack echoed through the room, followed by the heavy thud of a body hitting the floor.

I opened my eyes and saw Richard sprawled out on the expensive rug, completely unconscious.

Ethan stood over him, breathing heavily, his fists still raised in a firm defensive boxing stance.

"Nobody touches my mother," Ethan whispered fiercely, glaring down at the man who had sired him.

The heavy oak doors burst open, and five armed police officers rushed into the private dining room.

But as the officers began to aggressively read Richard and Clara their rights, I noticed Ethan staring down at the open manila folder.

He was looking closely at a third document hidden at the very bottom, one he had not shown to anyone yet.
