Chapter 4 - The Silent Partner

The entire dining room plunged into an absolute, breathless silence.

Richard stared at Mr. Sterling as if the older man had just spoken to him in a foreign language.

"What do you mean I don't have a job?" Richard demanded, his voice cracking with rising panic.

"I am the Vice President of Operations at Caldwell & Hayes!"

Mr. Sterling shook his head with a look of profound pity and utter disgust.

"You were the Vice President, Richard," Mr. Sterling corrected him sharply.

"But a silent majority shareholder initiated an emergency boardroom vote at noon today."

Richard stumbled backward, bumping into an empty wooden chair.

"That is impossible," Richard gasped, shaking his head frantically.

"No single shareholder has enough voting power to oust me without a full legal inquiry."

Mr. Sterling reached inside his suit pocket and pulled out a sleek, black envelope.

He casually tossed it onto the table right next to Ethan's manila folder.

"They do when they own exactly fifty-one percent of the holding company that owns your firm," Mr. Sterling explained calmly.

He looked around the room, making sure every guest heard the next part perfectly clearly.

"The board reviewed undeniable evidence of your offshore embezzlement and terminated your contract with severe cause."

Richard looked completely destroyed, his carefully constructed empire collapsing in a matter of seconds.

He lunged toward the table and ripped open the black envelope to read the official termination notice.

His eyes darted frantically across the legal jargon until they locked onto a single name at the very bottom of the page.

"No," Richard whispered, his hands trembling violently.

"This has to be a mistake, this cannot be real."

He slowly raised his head and locked his horrified eyes directly onto mine.

I sat up a little straighter in my chair, smoothing the fabric of my navy dress.

I allowed a small, satisfied smile to touch the corners of my lips for the first time all evening.

"It isn't a mistake, Richard," I said, my voice steady and surprisingly calm.

"I told you twenty years ago that my freelance graphic design business was doing quite well."

Richard’s jaw dropped open as he finally realized the catastrophic truth.

"I didn't just put my money into Ethan's secret education fund," I continued, savoring the look of utter defeat on his face.

"I also used a proxy to quietly buy up all the distressed shares of your failing company during the last recession."

The guests murmured in absolute awe, finally understanding who had truly held the power all these years.

I was not just the woman who raised his illegitimate son.

I was his boss.

Richard's face contorted into a mask of pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You think you have won, Margaret?" Richard spat, practically foaming at the mouth.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a crumpled, yellowed photograph.

"You might own my company, but I am about to take away the only thing you actually care about."

He slammed the old photograph onto the table for Ethan to clearly see.

"Your beloved mother didn't just quietly leave town, Ethan."

May you like

Richard smiled wickedly as he delivered his final, desperate blow.

"Margaret forced her out at gunpoint."
