Chapter 2 - The Stolen Legacy

The accusation hung in the air like a guillotine waiting to drop.

I stared at the document on the table, my vision blurring with a mixture of confusion and absolute rage.

My childhood home was the only thing my late parents had left me.

I had explicitly placed it in a separate trust to ensure it would one day belong entirely to Ethan.

Richard laughed nervously, looking around at his colleagues who were now staring at him with deep disgust.

"This is completely absurd," Richard stammered, wiping a bead of sweat from his forehead.

"Margaret, you aren't actually going to believe this fabricated nonsense, are you?" he pleaded, turning to me with fake affection.

I did not look at him.

Instead, I reached out with trembling fingers and pulled the legal document toward my side of the table.

There it was, in black and white ink, a signature that looked almost exactly like mine.

But I knew my own handwriting, and the slight hesitation on the loop of the 'M' proved it was a calculated forgery.

"You stole my parents' home," I whispered, the crushing reality knocking the breath out of my lungs.

"Margaret, be reasonable, we needed capital for my new business venture," Richard hissed, dropping the caring husband act.

Ethan slammed his hand down over the paper, cutting off Richard's pathetic excuses.

"There was no business venture," Ethan stated coldly to the horrified room.

"He wired the entire seven hundred thousand dollars to an offshore account registered in the Cayman Islands."

A collective murmur of shock rippled through the guests as Richard's pristine reputation crumbled into dust.

One of Richard's senior business partners stood up from his chair, his face flushed with extreme anger.

"Is this true, Richard?" the partner demanded loudly.

"Are you funneling domestic assets offshore while our firm is currently under federal audit?"

Richard panicked, his eyes darting toward the heavy oak doors of the private dining room.

He realized that he was not just losing his family tonight, he was losing his lucrative career.

Suddenly, Richard's panic morphed into a twisted, malicious grin.

He leaned back in his chair and took a slow, arrogant sip of his champagne.

"You think you're so smart, Ethan," Richard chuckled darkly.

"But you are twenty-four hours too late to play the hero."

Richard pulled out his cell phone and tapped the screen a few times before tossing it onto the table.

"I knew you were snooping around my home office last week, so I accelerated my timeline."

My stomach dropped as I looked at the banking confirmation displayed on the bright screen.

"I transferred every single penny out of our joint accounts this morning," Richard sneered.

"You and your precious fake mother are officially completely broke."
