Chapter 6 - The Mother's Return

The silence that followed Clara's entrance was thick enough to choke on.
She strolled into the elegant dining room with a shocking lack of grace, her heels clicking loudly against the hardwood floor.
I felt a cold sweat break out on the back of my neck.
For two decades, I had dreaded this exact moment, terrified that the ghost of Ethan's past would return to haunt us.
Clara stopped at the edge of the table, crossing her arms and looking down her nose at me.
"You look much older than I expected, Margaret," Clara sneered, popping her chewing gum aggressively.
I refused to let her intimidate me, standing tall and meeting her challenging stare.
"Why are you here, Clara?" I demanded, keeping my voice remarkably steady.
Richard walked over to Clara and placed a supportive, almost affectionate hand on her tense shoulder.
"She is here to reclaim what is rightfully hers," Richard declared proudly.
"She is here to finally rescue her son from the awful woman who stole him away."
Ethan looked completely overwhelmed, his eyes darting desperately between me, Richard, and the biological mother he had never known.
"You sold me," Ethan suddenly said, his voice barely above a harsh whisper.
He looked directly at Clara, his jaw tight with heavily suppressed emotion.
"Mom just told everyone that you gladly took fifty thousand dollars to walk away."
Clara's fake confidence faltered for a second, but she quickly recovered, wiping an imaginary tear from her eye.
"I was young, scared, and forced into a corner by this rich, manipulative witch," Clara cried out, pointing a trembling finger at me.
"She told me if I didn't take the money and run, she would make sure I went to jail on fake drug charges."
The guests gasped again, the pendulum of public opinion swinging wildly back and forth.
"I have spent the last twenty years crying myself to sleep, missing my sweet baby boy," Clara wailed dramatically.
It was a painfully bad performance, but Richard nodded along as if it were the most tragic story ever told.
"That is why she signed the affidavit, Ethan," Richard explained gently to his shocked son.
"We are going to put Margaret behind bars and finally be a real family."
Ethan looked down at the table, his hands gripping the edges so hard his knuckles turned totally white.
I stepped forward, desperate to reach my son before their toxic lies poisoned his pure heart.
"Ethan, please, you know me," I pleaded, hot tears finally spilling over my eyelashes.
"You know I would never hurt anyone, I just wanted to protect you and give you a good life."
Clara laughed harshly, a grating sound that completely shattered the emotional tension.
"Protect him?" Clara mocked, pulling a folded piece of paper from her cheap purse.
"You didn't protect him, you legally kidnapped him."
She slammed the paper onto the table, right on top of Ethan's brand new master's degree certificate.
"I never signed any adoption papers, Margaret," Clara announced with a wicked, missing-tooth grin.
"Which means in the eyes of the law, you are absolutely nothing to him."
My heart stopped completely as I stared down at the blank signature line on the original birth registry.
Richard smiled triumphantly and pulled out his cell phone to make a very important call.
May you like
"Hello, police department?" Richard said loudly into the phone for everyone to hear.
"I need to immediately report a confessed kidnapper at the downtown steakhouse."
