Chapter 3 - The Empty Threat

The word "broke" echoed brutally in my ears.
I felt a cold wave of panic wash over me as I realized the true extent of Richard's financial betrayal.
Twenty years of my hard work, my savings, and my sacrifices had been wiped out with a single click.
My hands began to shake uncontrollably under the table.
Ethan immediately noticed my distress and placed his warm, steady hand over mine.
"Don't let him scare you, Mom," Ethan said softly, his voice an anchor in the storm.
Richard let out a cruel, mocking laugh that made my blood boil.
"She should be terrified, Ethan," Richard boasted, standing up and buttoning his expensive suit jacket.
"I own the house, I own the cars, and by tomorrow morning, I will legally own the narrative."
He walked slowly around the large dining table, relishing the power he believed he held over us.
"You see, Ethan, you may have your shiny new master's degree, but you have no actual power in this city."
Richard stopped right behind Ethan's chair, leaning down to whisper menacingly in his ear.
"I know you are supposed to start your new job at Vanguard Financial on Monday."
My heart sank because Vanguard was the most prestigious investment firm in Chicago.
Ethan had spent grueling years studying late into the night just to earn that highly competitive position.
"One phone call from me to my friends on their board of directors, and your career is dead before it even begins," Richard threatened.
He smiled widely, looking around at the silent, extremely uncomfortable guests.
"So, here is how this is going to work," Richard announced, clapping his hands together.
"You are going to hand over all those documents, apologize to me in front of everyone, and Margaret will quietly agree to an uncontested divorce."
If we refused, Richard promised to destroy Ethan's reputation and leave me begging on the streets.
I looked at Ethan, utterly terrified that my son's bright future was about to be stolen by this monster.
I opened my mouth to surrender, willing to sacrifice my own dignity to save Ethan's career.
Before I could speak a single word, a slow, sarcastic clap broke the tense silence.
The sound came from a man sitting quietly in the shadowy corner of the private dining room.
He was an older gentleman whom Richard had invited purely to show off his elite social connections.
The man stood up, stepping confidently into the warm light of the crystal chandelier.
"That is a fascinating threat, Richard," the older man said, his voice deep and commanding.
Richard turned pale, suddenly looking very small and incredibly nervous.
"Mr. Sterling," Richard stammered, his arrogant posture instantly collapsing.
"I didn't realize you were paying attention to this unfortunate family drama."
Mr. Sterling adjusted his tailored tie and walked straight toward our side of the table.
"I am paying very close attention, Richard, especially since I am the CEO of Vanguard Financial."

He placed a reassuring hand on Ethan's shoulder and glared coldly at my husband.
"And you are not going to make a single phone call to my board, because as of this morning, you don't even have a job."
