Chapter 5 - The Legal Trap

The air in the room instantly grew cold and heavy.

Ethan stared at the yellowed photograph, his expression completely unreadable.

I felt my stomach twist into a painful, suffocating knot.

"That is a lie," I said loudly, my voice echoing off the walls.

"I never laid a hand on that woman, and I never owned a gun in my entire life!"

Richard sneered, pacing confidently back and forth like a predator sensing a fresh weakness.

"Oh, please, Margaret, drop the saintly mother routine," Richard mocked loudly.

"We all know you were desperate for a child, completely obsessed with the idea of being a mother."

He pointed a sharp finger directly at my chest, his eyes burning with malice.

"You found out about my affair, and you saw the perfect opportunity to steal a baby you could never have naturally."

The guests began to whisper among themselves, clearly unsettled by this incredibly dark accusation.

Ethan looked up from the photograph, his brow furrowed in deep confusion.

"Mom, what is he talking about?" Ethan asked, his voice wavering for the first time all night.

"He is trying to manipulate you, Ethan," I pleaded, desperately reaching out to him.

"His mother abandoned him at my door because she didn't want the responsibility of raising a child."

Richard let out a booming, theatrical laugh that sent shivers down my spine.

"Abandoned?" Richard echoed, shaking his head dramatically.

"She didn't abandon you, Ethan, she was terrified for her very life."

Richard pulled a folded legal document from his breast pocket and waved it wildly in the air.

"Margaret threatened to use her family's wealth to completely destroy Clara's life if she didn't hand you over."

I stood up from my chair, my fists clenched so tightly my nails dug deep into my palms.

"Clara was an unstable addict who asked me for fifty thousand dollars in exchange for the baby!" I yelled.

The truth finally slipped out, breaking twenty long years of carefully kept silence.

I had paid Clara the money to safely save Ethan from growing up in absolute squalor and danger.

Richard smirked, clearly thrilled that I had just admitted to a financial transaction involving a child.

"Thank you for the confession, Margaret," Richard said, his eyes gleaming with evil triumph.

"Buying a human being is a federal crime, and this document proves you actively coerced her."

He slammed the paper down next to the old photograph.

It was a signed affidavit from Clara, dated from last week, claiming I had violently kidnapped her newborn son.

Richard had secretly found her and paid her to write a false statement to completely destroy me.

"I have already submitted this affidavit to the district attorney," Richard announced proudly.

"You aren't going to take my company, Margaret, because you are going to spend the rest of your life in federal prison."

Suddenly, the heavy oak doors of the private dining room slowly groaned open.

The maître d' stepped aside, looking incredibly nervous and deeply apologetic.

A woman in a cheap, flashy red dress walked into the room, chewing gum loudly.

She looked older, hardened by years of rough living, but her striking green eyes were undeniably familiar.

"Well, well, well," the woman said, her voice raspy and offensively loud.

"Isn't this just a lovely little family reunion?"

May you like

Ethan froze completely, staring in horror at the face that exactly mirrored his own.

Clara had finally come back for her son.
