Chapter 2 - The Paper Trail

I did not panic when I realized I was being actively tracked by dangerous people.

I simply pulled into a crowded shopping mall parking lot and parked directly under a bright security camera.

I crawled under the rear bumper and easily located the small magnetic tracking device attached to the frame.

Instead of destroying it, I attached the tracker to the bumper of an interstate cargo truck parked nearby.

I watched the truck drive away, knowing it would lead Daniel and Evelyn on a wild chase across state lines.

I drove to my secure downtown office, using my classified access card to enter the building long after midnight.

I sat at my desk and pulled up the financial records for Mercer Construction Company.

I had spent a massive portion of Daniel’s life insurance payout to save his mother’s failing business out of pure guilt.

I used my advanced forensic accounting software to trace every single dollar I had injected into their corporate accounts.

The money had not been used to pay off construction debts or purchase new building materials.

The funds had been meticulously siphoned into a web of offshore shell companies registered in the Cayman Islands.

The sheer complexity of the money laundering operation proved that Evelyn was not just a grieving mother.

She was the mastermind behind a massive financial syndicate, and Daniel’s fake death was their ultimate payday.

I dug deeper into the digital archives to find the original authorization forms that established the offshore accounts.

The screen loaded a high-resolution scan of the primary signature page.

My blood ran completely cold when I saw the name signed at the bottom of the document.

The signature belonged to me, flawlessly forged to make me the legal owner of the illegal accounts.

If the federal authorities ever discovered this money, I would be the only one going to prison for decades.
