Chapter 1 - The Invisible Thread

The silence in the brightly lit hallway felt heavy enough to crush my lungs.

Evelyn stared at me with eyes that resembled cold and hardened steel.

She had completely dropped the grieving mother persona she had perfected over the last five years.

I kept my hand firmly in my coat pocket to ensure the audio recorder was capturing every single word.

Daniel took a menacing step forward and demanded that I hand over my cell phone.

I stood my ground and reminded him that assaulting a federal bank employee inside a hospital would instantly draw police attention.

I slowly backed away toward the elevator bank while maintaining direct eye contact with the man who had ruined my life.

I told them my security team was tracking my location and would breach the facility if I did not check in within five minutes.

It was a complete bluff, but Daniel hesitated just long enough for the elevator doors to open behind me.

I stepped inside and pressed the lobby button without breaking my icy stare.

The doors slid shut, finally severing the suffocating tension that bound us together in that hallway.

My knees immediately buckled, and I leaned against the cool metal wall of the elevator to catch my breath.

The betrayal was so profound that it felt as though someone had physically ripped my heart out of my chest.

I quickly composed myself before the doors opened to the busy main lobby of the recovery center.

I walked briskly to my car, constantly checking over my shoulder for any signs of pursuit.

I locked myself inside the vehicle and immediately connected my phone to my secure federal server.

I uploaded the audio recording to a hidden cloud drive to ensure the evidence would survive even if I did not.

I started the engine and sped out of the parking lot, desperate to put as much distance between myself and my dead husband as possible.

As I merged onto the dark highway, a small red light suddenly began blinking on my dashboard console.

My car’s internal diagnostic system alerted me to an unauthorized wireless signal broadcasting from beneath my rear bumper.

Someone had planted a military-grade tracking device on my vehicle while I was inside the clinic.
