Chapter 6 - The Unlikely Ally

I immediately dropped to my knees, holding my empty hands high in the air to show I was completely unarmed.

The blinding spotlight from the helicopter pinned me to the gravel driveway like a trapped insect.

I screamed toward the cabin, begging Louise to stay hidden inside and keep Nora completely out of sight.

Heavy tactical boots crunched loudly on the gravel as a heavily armed SWAT team swarmed the property from the surrounding woods.

Rough hands grabbed my shoulders, slamming my chest violently against the hood of my parked car.

They tightly secured heavy metal handcuffs around my wrists, completely ignoring my desperate pleas to explain the situation.

Another group of armed officers quickly moved to cut Vanessa free from the thick duct tape binding her to the oak tree.

Vanessa immediately began sobbing hysterically, playing the role of the traumatized, innocent victim with terrifying, Academy-Award-winning precision.

"He completely lost his mind, officers, he was going to kill me and run away with my poor stepdaughter," she cried loudly.

The lead tactical commander glared at me with absolute disgust before forcefully shoving me toward a waiting armored vehicle.

I watched in total, helpless agony as three officers breached the cabin door and brought out a terrified Nora.

Louise was aggressively pushed out right behind her, screaming frantically about the poisoned juice and the fraudulent custody papers.

The police ignored her completely, treating us like dangerous criminals while treating Vanessa like a delicate saint.

They placed Nora into the back of a separate police cruiser, strictly refusing to let me say a single word to her.

I was violently shoved into the dark, cramped compartment of the armored transport truck.

The heavy metal doors slammed shut, plunging me into absolute, suffocating darkness.

I sat on the cold steel bench, my heart shattering into a million pieces as the truck engine roared to life.

I had completely failed my daughter, and now she was heading straight into the deadly, waiting hands of Doctor Colin Vance.

The truck bumped violently down the winding mountain road for what felt like an absolute eternity.

Suddenly, the vehicle slammed on its heavy brakes, throwing me forcefully against the steel partition.

I heard muffled shouts from the front cab, followed by the terrifying, distinct sound of a brief struggle.

The heavy metal doors at the back of the transport truck suddenly swung open, flooding the compartment with bright sunlight.

I squinted against the harsh glare, expecting to see a group of angry police officers ready to drag me to a holding cell.

Instead, a tall, heavily tattooed man in a dark suit was standing there, holding a massive set of bolt cutters.

He quickly stepped inside the truck and effortlessly snapped the thick metal chain connecting my handcuffs to the bench.

"Who the hell are you?" I asked, completely bewildered by the sudden, violent rescue.

The man offered a grim, humorless smile as he helped me out of the stolen police transport vehicle.

"My name is Marcus, and I am the private investigator your late wife Grace hired precisely one week before she died."
