Chapter 5 - The Legal Trap

I stared at Vanessa in absolute horror, struggling to comprehend the sheer magnitude of her terrifying words.
Colin had bribed a corrupt family court judge to legally bypass my parental rights in the middle of the night.
They had used the fabricated medical records of Nora's supposedly violent behavior to declare me an unfit, negligent parent.
"You forged my signature on the custody surrender documents," I realized aloud, my stomach twisting in violent knots.
Vanessa laughed cruelly, straining against the thick layers of silver duct tape binding her to the tree.
"We didn't forge anything, Ethan, we simply slipped the surrender forms into the massive stack of real estate contracts you blindly signed last week."
My mind flashed back to the endless pile of mundane legal documents Vanessa had handed me during breakfast a few days ago.
I had signed every single page without reading them thoroughly, completely trusting the woman I thought was my loving wife.
I had unknowingly signed away my only child to a psychopathic doctor who wanted her dead.
I pulled out my burner phone and frantically dialed Caleb to verify this absolute nightmare.
Caleb answered instantly, his voice heavy with exhaustion and undeniable panic.
He confirmed that a midnight emergency injunction had been filed in the county court, legally transferring Nora's temporary custody to Doctor Colin Vance.
The corrupt judge had already issued a massive, statewide amber alert declaring that I had violently kidnapped my own daughter.
Every single police officer in the state of California was currently hunting me down as a highly dangerous fugitive.
"You need to hide, Ethan, because the local authorities are treating this as a high-risk hostage situation," Caleb warned me urgently.
I looked back at the cabin, knowing that Louise and Nora were completely trapped in this legal nightmare with me.
If the police found us here, they would forcefully take Nora away and hand her directly over to Colin.
I walked back to Vanessa, my fury burning so intensely I could barely see straight.
"How do we completely reverse the corrupt judge's emergency custody order?" I demanded quietly.
Vanessa smiled mockingly, refusing to offer a single piece of useful information.
I pulled out my phone and held it directly in front of her arrogant, unyielding face.
I told her I was going to livestream a video of her confessing to the poisoning directly to Caleb's federal contacts.
She just shook her head, completely unfazed by my desperate, empty threats.
"Nobody will ever believe a wanted fugitive holding a woman hostage in the woods, Ethan."
Suddenly, the deafening sound of heavy helicopter blades chopped through the quiet morning air.
I looked up to see a massive, black tactical helicopter hovering directly above the tree line.
A blinding white spotlight hit the front yard, completely washing out my vision in a harsh glare.

A loud, heavily amplified voice boomed from the sky above us.
"Ethan Wright, drop your weapons and step away from the hostage, or we are authorized to use lethal force."
