Chapter 4 - The Betrayal

Vanessa smiled incredibly warmly, a deeply terrifying contrast to the deadly weapon firmly gripped in her hand.

She stepped away from the open trunk, her designer clothes wrinkled but her posture radiating absolute, arrogant confidence.

She had somehow known exactly where I would run, anticipating every single desperate move I thought I was making.

I slowly raised my empty hands, keeping my body carefully positioned between her and the front door of the cabin.

"How did you get in there without me seeing you?" I demanded, my voice shaking with barely suppressed rage.

Vanessa let out a soft, mocking laugh that echoed eerily through the quiet, isolated mountain trees.

She explained that she had slipped into the trunk while the car was parked outside my sister's house hours ago.

She had patiently waited in the dark, enduring the chaotic drive just to infiltrate my final, desperate sanctuary.

"You honestly thought a mediocre security guard like Caleb Price could outsmart us?" she asked rhetorically.

She took a slow step forward, leveling the barrel of the handgun directly at the center of my chest.

She demanded that I walk back inside the cabin and wake up my daughter immediately.

I refused to move a single muscle, firmly planting my feet on the rotting wooden floorboards of the porch.

"I will die before I let you put another drop of that poison into my daughter's mouth," I stated with absolute conviction.

Vanessa simply sighed, looking at me with an expression of profound, sociopathic boredom.

"I really didn't want to kill you in front of Nora, Ethan, but you are making this incredibly difficult."

She raised the gun slightly, her finger slowly tightening around the cold metal trigger.

Suddenly, the wooden front door of the cabin swung open behind me with a loud, violent crash.

My sister Louise stepped out onto the porch, holding my grandfather's old, double-barreled hunting shotgun.

She pointed the massive weapon directly at Vanessa's face with hands that were completely steady and entirely lethal.

"Drop the handgun right now, you psychotic witch, or I will blow you back down the mountain," Louise screamed.

Vanessa froze, her arrogant smile instantly vanishing as she calculated the terrifying new odds.

She slowly lowered her weapon, placing it carefully on the gravel driveway with extreme caution.

I quickly rushed forward, kicking the handgun far away into the dense, overgrown brush.

I grabbed Vanessa by the arm, roughly shoving her toward the massive oak tree near the edge of the property.

I used a thick roll of duct tape from my car to secure her wrists tightly around the rough tree trunk.

We finally had the mastermind completely trapped, giving us the perfect opportunity to interrogate her and end this nightmare.

I demanded to know exactly what Doctor Colin Vance was planning to do with the stolen trust fund money.

Vanessa just looked at me with a sickening, victorious smirk spreading across her face.

"You are entirely too late, Ethan, because Colin isn't going after the trust fund money anymore."

She leaned forward, her voice dropping to a sinister, chilling whisper.

"While you were busy driving me up this mountain, Colin was busy finalizing the adoption papers with the family court judge he bribed."
