Chapter 3 - The Desperate Escape

I scooped Nora up into my arms and signaled for Louise to follow me toward the back of the house.
The violent kicking at the front door intensified, shaking the entire wooden frame and causing the plaster to crack.
We rushed through the dark laundry room and quietly slipped out the back door into the fenced yard.
The night air was completely still, but my heart was hammering against my ribs like a frantic drum.
I guided my sister and daughter through the dense bushes, heading toward the narrow alleyway behind the property.
We managed to reach my parked car just as the front door of the house finally splintered and gave way.
I shoved them into the backseat, scrambled behind the steering wheel, and started the engine without turning on the headlights.
I threw the car into drive and sped down the dark alley, only flipping the lights on when we reached the main road.
My phone buzzed on the dashboard, displaying an incoming video call from Caleb's secure server line.
I answered it using the car's Bluetooth system, my eyes frantically scanning the empty road ahead.
Caleb informed me that his operatives had arrived at the house just in time to see two armed men fleeing the scene.
He confirmed that the men were highly trained private mercenaries frequently employed by Doctor Colin Vance.
I realized with horrifying clarity that this was no longer just a domestic dispute over a valuable piece of real estate.
This was a highly organized, heavily funded criminal conspiracy designed to execute my family for profit.
I needed to find an incredibly secure location where not even Vanessa's digital spyware could track our movements.
I decided to drive to a secluded, off-the-grid cabin in the mountains that my late grandfather had left me.
It was a property completely disconnected from the internet, entirely off the grid, and registered under a different family name.
The long drive up the winding mountain roads was tense, filled with suffocating silence and terrifying paranoia.
Nora eventually fell asleep in Louise's arms, completely exhausted by the sudden, chaotic trauma of the night.
We finally reached the hidden cabin just as the sun began to slowly rise over the jagged mountain peaks.
I unlocked the heavy iron door and ushered them inside, feeling a temporary wave of profound relief wash over me.
I started a fire in the old stone hearth and wrapped Nora in a thick, woolen blanket on the dusty sofa.
I walked outside to the front porch to call Caleb and give him our exact GPS coordinates for emergency extraction.
But as I raised the phone to my ear, the digital screen flickered wildly and suddenly turned completely black.
A recorded voice message suddenly began playing through the phone's broken speaker, echoing in the quiet mountain air.
"You should have checked the trunk of your car before you drove to your little secret hideout, Ethan."
May you like
I slowly turned my head toward the gravel driveway, my entire body freezing in absolute, paralyzing terror.
The trunk of my car was wide open, and standing right beside it was Vanessa, holding a sleek black handgun.
