Chapter 2 - THE GETAWAY CAR

Rosa had spent twenty-four months looking over her shoulder, living in cash-only motels, hiding from the corporate assassins who had murdered her husband. David Santos had been a lead structural engineer for Sterling Industries. He had found a fatal flaw in a billion-dollar dam project, and he was silenced for it.
Rosa had always assumed Alexander Sterling ordered the hit.
Now, trapped in the back of Alexander’s armored Maybach with Mia asleep on the leather seats, Rosa clutched her daughter tightly.
"Why did you pretend to be dead?" Alexander asked quietly, pouring her a glass of water from the car’s console.

"Because your company tried to burn us alive," Rosa spat, tears cutting through the grime on her cheeks. "David found out that the steel you used in the Vallejo Dam was defective. He was going to the press. The next night, our house went up in flames. We barely escaped."
Alexander looked physically sick. "Rosa, I swear to you on my life, I knew nothing about the defective steel or the fire. My COO, Victor Vance, handled that project while I was overseas." Alexander’s jaw tightened, a dangerous, protective fury settling into his features. "Victor lied to me. He told me David was stealing company funds and died in a tragic accident. If what you're saying is true... I will tear him apart."
