Chapter 8 - The Desperate Deal

Emily and Noah hid behind a rusting, hollowed-out shipping container, trying to quiet their heavy, ragged breathing.

They watched through the dense fog as Mrs. Harper aggressively confronted Victoria in the middle of the dark parking lot.

“You thought you could double-cross us and take the money for yourself, Victoria?” Mrs. Harper yelled, her voice echoing loudly.

“I am taking back what is rightfully mine, you pathetic, thieving teacher!” Victoria screamed back, slamming her broken laptop onto the pavement.

Emily realized the two women were completely distracted by their own bitter greed and mutual hatred.

“This is our only chance to make it to the school and upload the real ledger,” Noah whispered, pulling the genuine flash drive from his sock.

They carefully crept along the perimeter fence, using the thick shadows to avoid the sweeping beams of the women's flashlights.

They managed to slip through a broken chain-link gate and flagged down a passing taxi on the main road.

Within twenty minutes, they were standing outside the massive, brick facade of Crestwood High School.

The building was completely dark, save for the faint glow of emergency exit lights illuminating the main hallways.

Noah used a simple master key he had bought online to effortlessly bypass the side door’s electronic lock.

They sprinted silently through the familiar corridors, heading straight for the audio-visual control room above the auditorium.

“The morning assembly starts in exactly three hours, we need to set the projection on a delayed, un-cancellable timer,” Noah explained.

He booted up the main control console, frantically typing lines of code to override the school's basic security firewalls.

Emily stood by the small glass window, keeping a terrified watch over the dark, empty auditorium below them.

“Got it, the files are uploaded and locked into the system, nobody can stop the presentation once the microphone is turned on,” Noah smiled in triumph.

Just as he hit the final enter key, the heavy metal door to the AV room slammed shut with a deafening crash.

The deadbolt clicked from the outside, locking them securely inside the tiny, soundproof control booth.

The PA system crackled to life, and Principal Vance’s smooth, menacing voice echoed through the small room.

“Did you really think my ex-wife and my sister were the only ones tracking your little adventure tonight?” the principal mocked.

Emily rushed to the door, pounding her fists against the solid steel until her knuckles bled.

“You are going to prison for what you did to my family and those scholarship funds!” Emily screamed at the ceiling speaker.

“Actually, Emily, you two are going to take the fall for a tragic, accidental electrical fire in the AV room,” he replied coldly.

Through the glass window, Emily saw the principal standing on the auditorium stage, holding a heavy red gas can.

He began pouring the gasoline directly onto the thick velvet curtains surrounding the wooden stage below.

He pulled a silver lighter from his suit pocket and looked directly up at the control booth with a psychotic grin.
