Chapter 5 - The Hidden Ledger

Noah collapsed onto the worn living room sofa, gasping for air as Emily’s mother rushed to get him ice.
He explained how two older men in suits had cornered him behind the tech repair shop downtown.
They had forcibly taken his phone and his backpack, warning him to stay far away from Emily’s academic problems.
“But they did not know I had already transferred the raw data to this external micro-drive,” Noah coughed, holding it up.
Emily took the tiny drive, her hands shaking as she plugged it into her old, battered laptop on the kitchen table.
She opened the file folder, expecting to see the video of Mrs. Harper demanding the expensive phone.
Instead, the drive was filled with hundreds of complex, encrypted financial spreadsheets and banking records.
“Noah, this is not the video from the classroom,” Emily said, her brow furrowing in deep confusion.
Noah leaned forward, wincing as he looked at the bright laptop screen displaying rows of red numbers.
“The data recovery guy must have accidentally pulled the hidden cache files from the school’s main server when I connected my phone to their Wi-Fi last week.”
Emily clicked on a file labeled "Scholarship Disbursement Fund" and her jaw dropped completely open.
The principal and Mrs. Harper were not just trying to secure one scholarship for Chloe.
They had been systematically embezzling hundreds of thousands of dollars from the district's low-income assistance funds for five years.
They created fake student profiles, awarded them massive grants, and funneled the money into private offshore accounts.
“My god, this goes so much deeper than a broken cell phone or a stolen grade,” Emily whispered in pure shock.
Emily’s mother stared at the screen, her fear slowly transforming into a fierce, protective anger.
“We are taking this directly to the police right now, this is grand larceny,” her mother declared, grabbing her car keys.
Suddenly, the harsh sound of police sirens erupted from the street below their small apartment window.
Red and blue lights flashed intensely against the living room walls, illuminating the terrified faces of the three people inside.
A heavy fist pounded aggressively on their front door, demanding they open up immediately.
“Police department, open the door, we have a warrant for the arrest of Emily Harper!” a deep voice shouted.
Emily froze, realizing Mrs. Harper had legally changed her own surname after a divorce, but Emily's last name was different.
The officer had used the wrong name, reading off a deeply flawed, quickly manufactured warrant.
Noah slammed the laptop shut and shoved the flash drive deep into Emily’s jacket pocket.

“They framed you for the theft of the funds before we could expose them,” Noah whispered urgently.
The front door splintered violently inward as a heavy battering ram smashed through the deadbolt.
