Chapter 4 - The Ransom Note

Emily froze on the concrete sidewalk, her heart dropping directly into the pit of her stomach.
She watched helplessly as Mrs. Harper tossed Noah’s backpack casually into the backseat of the dark sedan.
The teacher offered a chilling, triumphant smile before the tinted window rolled back up and the car sped away.
Emily frantically dialed Noah’s number again, but it immediately went straight to his automated voicemail.
She ran all the way to Noah’s house, her lungs burning as she hammered her fists against his front door.
His mother answered, looking confused and slightly annoyed by the frantic, breathless teenager standing on her porch.
“Noah has not come home from his tutoring session yet, Emily,” his mother said, wiping her hands on a dish towel.
Emily forced a fake smile, pretending everything was perfectly fine before walking away with her mind racing.
She knew Noah wasn't at tutoring; he was being silenced by the very people supposed to protect them.
Emily walked back to her own apartment, clutching the printed scholarship document tightly against her chest.
When she unlocked her front door, the apartment was completely silent and entirely dark.
“Mom?” Emily called out, flipping the light switch in the narrow, cramped hallway.
Her mother was sitting perfectly still at the kitchen table, staring blankly at a crisp white envelope.
Emily rushed over, her stomach twisting with anxiety as she noticed her mother’s pale, tear-stained face.
“They sent a courier while you were out,” her mother whispered, her voice completely devoid of any emotion.
Emily carefully reached for the heavy envelope, noticing the official gold seal of the school district on the flap.
She pulled out a formal legal document, officially charging Emily with the malicious destruction of school faculty property.
The letter stated that the police would be involved unless Emily voluntarily withdrew from the school immediately.
“We have to move, Emily, I cannot afford a lawyer and I cannot let you go to jail,” her mother sobbed quietly.
“Mom, it is a lie, they are just trying to steal my scholarship so the principal’s daughter can win it,” Emily pleaded.
She slammed the printed library documents onto the table, desperately trying to explain the massive conspiracy.
Her mother looked at the papers, her tired eyes scanning the undeniable connection between the principal and the teacher.
A sudden, loud knock at their apartment door interrupted the tense, emotional conversation.
Emily crept toward the door and peered through the small, scratched peephole.
Standing in the dimly lit hallway was Noah, covered in dirt and clutching his ribs in obvious pain.
Emily ripped the door open and pulled him inside, locking the deadbolt quickly behind him.

Noah leaned heavily against the wall, reaching into his torn jacket to pull out a small, metallic flash drive.
“They roughed me up and took the phone, but I managed to swallow the backup memory card before they checked my pockets.”
