Chapter 5 - Blood in the Shadows

I screamed and shielded Noah with my entire body, fully preparing for the fatal impact.

A loud gunshot echoed through the bunker, but the bullet did not strike me or my son.

The massive mercenary collapsed heavily to the floor with a clean bullet wound directly through his shoulder.

Julian sprinted across the room, completely ignoring the heavy crossfire surrounding us.

He grabbed my arm with incredible strength and forcefully pulled me toward a hidden escape tunnel.

We plunged into the pitch-black darkness of the narrow passageway as the safe house burned behind us.

Julian activated a small tactical flashlight, illuminating the damp, terrifying walls of the underground sewer system.

We ran frantically for what felt like hours until my exhausted legs threatened to give out completely.

We finally reached a rusted iron ladder that led up to a deserted, forgotten subway maintenance station.

Julian pushed heavily against the heavy grate and helped me climb up onto the cracked concrete platform.

He suddenly stumbled forward and collapsed onto a broken wooden bench.

I shined the flashlight on him and gasped in absolute horror at the sight of his torn tactical vest.

A dark, massive pool of crimson blood was spreading rapidly across the left side of his stomach.

He had bravely taken a bullet for me during the chaotic escape and had hidden it the entire time.

I frantically tore my expensive designer blouse into long strips to create a desperate, tight tourniquet.

Julian grabbed my shaking hand and weakly told me to leave him behind to save the baby.

I fiercely refused, firmly stating that I was completely done running away from my terrifying problems.

I pulled out the silver flash drive Vanessa had given me and noticed a tiny, blinking red light on its casing.

It was not a data drive at all.

It was a highly advanced, active GPS tracking beacon guiding Grant's men directly to our exact location.
