Chapter 4 - The Betrayal Within

I spun around wildly, aiming my heavy weapon directly at the dark shadows of the bunker.

Vanessa stepped slowly out of a hidden supply closet with her hands raised high in the air.

She sobbed uncontrollably and swore that Grant had forced her to plant the tracking signal on my coat.

She claimed she no longer wanted any part of his terrifying criminal empire or his endless lies.

Julian kept his assault rifle aimed squarely at her chest, his finger resting dangerously close to the trigger.

Vanessa slowly reached into her pocket and pulled out a small, encrypted silver flash drive.

She promised that the drive contained enough irrefutable evidence to send Grant to federal prison for life.

She only wanted us to guarantee her safe passage out of the country in exchange for the priceless data.

I slowly lowered my gun, feeling a sudden wave of desperate empathy for the broken woman.

I knew exactly what it felt like to be completely manipulated and trapped by Grant's immense cruelty.

I walked toward her to accept the flash drive, completely ignoring Julian's harsh, shouted warning.

As my fingers brushed against the cold metal, Vanessa’s terrified expression instantly transformed into a wicked smile.

She aggressively shoved the flash drive into my hand and violently kicked me hard in the stomach.

I collapsed to the concrete floor, gasping desperately for air as the wind was entirely knocked out of me.

Julian immediately lunged forward to grab her, but a massive explosion suddenly rocked the heavy bunker doors.

Thick, blinding smoke poured into the room as dozens of Grant’s elite mercenaries flooded the underground space.

Vanessa laughed triumphantly and quickly slipped away into the absolute chaos of the fierce firefight.

Julian provided heavy covering fire, allowing me to crawl desperately toward Noah's protected crib.

I scooped my crying baby into my arms and prayed for a miracle as bullets shredded the concrete walls.

A tall mercenary broke through the defensive line and aimed his shotgun directly at my fragile son.
