Chapter 9 - The Trap Closes

The deafening roar of the armored engine completely drowned out my mother's sudden scream of pure terror.

My husband looked incredibly pale and dangerously weak, but his eyes burned with a fierce, protective fury I had never seen before.

Officer Miller had completely ignored my orders to wait and had successfully coordinated a massive, overwhelming tactical strike.

Dozens of heavily armed SWAT officers flooded instantly into the dark warehouse, shouting loud, aggressive commands for everyone to surrender immediately.

Marcus Vance’s dangerous thugs instantly raised their heavy assault rifles and opened rapid fire directly at the armored vehicle.

The massive concrete walls echoed violently with the terrifying sound of heavy gunfire shattering the quiet winter night.

I dove aggressively to the dirty floor, crawling frantically on my hands and knees toward the corner where my daughters were hiding.

My husband leaped bravely from the heavy truck, tackling one of the armed thugs completely to the ground despite his severe physical illness.

He punched the massive man squarely in the jaw, violently knocking him unconscious before securing his heavy weapon.

My father dropped his own gun immediately and fell to his knees with his hands raised high in the air, sobbing loudly as an officer handcuffed him.

I finally reached the dirty mattress and threw my entire body completely over my screaming, terrified children to protect them from the flying bullets.

The intense firefight lasted exactly two minutes before the highly trained SWAT team entirely neutralized the dangerous criminal threat.

The heavy warehouse fell eerily silent, save for the quiet moans of the injured thugs and the heavy boots of the police officers securing the area.

I sat up slowly, tightly clutching my beautiful daughters to my chest and weeping with profound, overwhelming joy.

My husband stumbled weakly toward us, dropping the heavy rifle and falling to his knees to wrap his strong arms around all three of us.

"I thought I lost you forever," he whispered, burying his face deeply into my messy, tear-soaked hair.

I closed my eyes and breathed in his familiar scent, finally believing that the horrific nightmare was completely over.

Then, a sudden, sharp cry of pain completely shattered our beautiful moment of reunion.

I opened my eyes and realized in absolute horror that my three-year-old daughter was no longer in my arms.

My mother had quietly crawled through the chaotic crossfire and snatched the tiny girl when I was distracted by my husband.

She was currently dragging my screaming baby backward up a steep, rusted metal staircase that led to a high catwalk perfectly suspended over the freezing, rushing river outside.

She held the baby dangerously over the broken metal railing with one arm, aiming a stolen police pistol directly at my husband with her other hand.

"If anyone takes a single step toward me, I will drop her right into the ice," my mother screamed wildly, her perfectly styled hair now completely ruined and chaotic.
