Chapter 2 - The Interrogation

I threw myself desperately in front of the closed door of the pediatric room, blocking the police officers with my entire body.

The stern woman with the yellow clipboard stepped forward, her eyes scanning me with deep, professional suspicion.

"Are you the biological mother of the two female minors currently inside this room?" she asked in a loud, authoritative voice.

I nodded frantically, my chest heaving as I tried to catch my breath.

"My name is Sarah, and I am a senior investigator with the State Child Protective Services division," she announced coldly.

"You cannot take my daughters away from me," I pleaded, pressing my back hard against the solid wooden door.

One of the police officers placed a heavy hand firmly on his utility belt and ordered me to step aside immediately.

"We have received a highly credible report of severe child endangerment and criminal parental abandonment," the investigator stated.

"My mother is a vicious, vindictive liar who intentionally locked them outside to punish me," I cried out, my voice echoing loudly across the busy hospital ward.

"The police report states that you drove away before the door was ever opened, leaving an eight-year-old and a three-year-old completely alone in dangerously sub-zero temperatures," she countered sharply.

"I thought they were safely inside with their grandparents, I swear to God," I begged, tears streaming heavily down my face.

The loud commotion in the hallway had finally awakened my husband in his room down the hall.

Despite his severe illness and the tangled IV tubes in his arms, he had dragged himself out of bed and was slowly stumbling toward us.

He leaned heavily against the wall for support, his face completely pale as he demanded that the officers leave his family alone.

The investigator barely even glanced in his direction before flipping open the heavy metal clip on her yellow folder.

"We are placing both children under emergency state custody effective immediately, pending a full criminal investigation," she declared flatly.

"You cannot just take them based on one malicious phone call from a crazy woman," my husband yelled, his voice cracking from severe exhaustion.

The investigator looked up from her documents and stared directly into my terrified eyes.

"We did not base this emergency removal solely on your mother's telephone call," she revealed quietly.

My heart stopped completely in my chest as I tried to process her confusing words.

"What are you talking about?" I whispered, feeling my legs begin to shake uncontrollably.

"In cases of familial disputes, we require secondary independent verification before we forcefully remove a child from a medical facility," she explained.

"We don't know anyone else who was there," I stuttered, my mind racing wildly to find an explanation.

"We received a secondary report from a mandated reporter inside this very hospital who corroborated your mother's exact story," the investigator said.

I stared at her in absolute shock, knowing it was entirely impossible for anyone else to know what had happened at that house.

"The mandated reporter stated that you arrived at the hospital alone, smelled heavily of alcohol, and loudly bragged about dumping your kids on the street," she read directly from the official file.

"That is a complete and absolute lie," my husband screamed, trying violently to push past the police officers to reach me.

The officers grabbed his arms instantly, restraining him tightly against the cold hospital wall.

"Who in this hospital would ever say something so horrible about me?" I demanded, sobbing uncontrollably.

The investigator flipped the page over and pointed a neatly manicured finger at a signature on the bottom line.

I leaned in closely and read the name printed clearly on the official state document.

It was Nurse Rebecca, the very same woman who had been exclusively caring for my husband all week.
