Chapter 3 - The Inside Job

I stared at the signature on the investigator’s clipboard until the bold black ink completely blurred from my tears.

Nurse Rebecca had always been overly sweet to us, offering me extra blankets and bringing my husband fresh water with a warm smile.

I completely refused to believe that the kind woman who had held my hand just hours ago had knowingly fabricated a vicious lie to destroy my family.

"I need to speak to Nurse Rebecca right now," I demanded, wiping the wet tears fiercely from my cheeks.

The CPS investigator shook her head firmly and signaled for the police officers to open the door to my daughters' room.

"You are legally prohibited from having any further contact with the minors until a family court judge reviews your criminal case," she warned me.

I lunged forward to grab the door handle, but a strong police officer instantly pinned my arms forcefully behind my back.

"Please don't wake them up, they are terrified and freezing," I screamed as the investigator disappeared into the dark pediatric room.

My husband fought weakly against the officers holding him, but his severe illness caused his knees to buckle entirely.

I watched in absolute, paralyzing horror as the investigator carried my screaming three-year-old out into the hallway.

My eight-year-old followed closely behind them, clinging desperately to the investigator's coat and crying out loudly for me.

"I love you both so much, I will get you back, I promise," I yelled desperately as the officers dragged me forcefully down the opposite corridor.

They shoved me roughly onto a hard plastic chair near the main elevator bank and strictly ordered me not to move a single inch.

As the elevator doors closed and took my precious children away into the state custody system, my entire world shattered into pieces.

I sat there in the cold hallway, completely numb, trying to figure out how my vindictive mother had managed to reach a hospital nurse.

Then I remembered a seemingly harmless conversation I had with Rebecca three days ago about our hometown.

She had specifically mentioned growing up in the exact same wealthy neighborhood where my parents currently lived.

A sickening realization washed over me as I connected the invisible dots.

My mother was a prominent local socialite who heavily funded nursing scholarships for the community college.

Rebecca was not a random mandated reporter who made a tragic mistake.

She was a highly paid pawn directly controlled by my wealthy, manipulative mother.

I slowly stood up from the plastic chair, completely ignoring the stern warning from the police officer standing nearby.

I marched straight toward my husband's private hospital room, my blood boiling with a terrifying, uncontrollable rage.

I pushed the heavy wooden door open quietly and stepped into the dimly lit room.

Nurse Rebecca was standing directly over my husband's bed, her back turned entirely toward me.

She was holding a large plastic syringe filled with a cloudy, yellow liquid.

I watched closely as she expertly inserted the sharp needle directly into his main intravenous line.

"What exactly are you putting into his veins?" I asked loudly, my voice echoing harshly in the quiet room.

Rebecca jumped violently in pure surprise, completely dropping the empty plastic syringe onto the linoleum floor.

She turned to face me, a cold, calculated smirk slowly spreading across her pale face.

"Just a little something your mother ordered to ensure he stays asleep for a very, very long time," she whispered maliciously.
