Chapter 8 - The Desperate Bargain

The cold, freezing air in the warehouse suddenly felt entirely suffocating as I stared at the tiny red button in her manicured hand.

My mother smiled warmly, a terrifying expression of complete sociopathic control that chilled me straight to the bone.

"You always were remarkably stubborn, Sarah, but even you must know when you are completely beaten," she said smoothly.

She reached into the deep pocket of her expensive fur coat and pulled out a thick stack of tightly folded legal documents.

She tossed them casually onto the dirty concrete floor directly at my frozen feet.

"These papers are a full, legally binding confession stating you are severely mentally ill and completely unfit to raise children," she explained calmly.

"You are forcing me to legally abandon my own babies," I whispered, feeling the hot tears finally spilling over my freezing cheeks.

"If you sign them right now and walk away forever, I will give you the digital deactivation code for the lethal pump attached to your husband," she promised.

I looked over at the dark corner where my sweet daughters were huddled quietly together on the filthy mattress.

My eight-year-old was bravely holding her tiny sister's head against her chest, desperately trying to protect her from this horrific nightmare.

They were looking at me with pure, innocent trust, completely believing that their mother was going to save them.

I slowly bent down and picked up the heavy legal documents and the expensive silver pen she had dropped beside them.

My father let out a quiet, pathetic sob of relief, completely believing his massive gambling debts were finally going to be paid off.

I placed the thick papers against the cold concrete wall and clicked the silver pen open with violently trembling fingers.

I wrote my signature on every single dotted line, legally surrendering the only things in this world I truly loved.

I walked slowly back to my mother and handed her the signed confession, my heart completely shattering into a million pieces.

"Now give me the deactivation code for the hospital pump immediately," I demanded, holding my hand out firmly.

My mother carefully inspected every single signature to ensure they were completely valid before placing the papers safely into her pocket.

She let out a short, highly amused laugh and looked at me with pure, unfiltered malice.

"I am absolutely not giving you any code, because dead men cannot testify in a family court custody battle," she stated coldly.

She turned to the dark shadows behind her and loudly ordered Marcus Vance's hidden thugs to eliminate us all.

Three massive men in dark tactical gear stepped out from behind the rusted shipping containers, raising heavy assault rifles directly at us.

Suddenly, the massive metal loading doors of the warehouse exploded completely off their rusted steel hinges with a deafening crash.

A heavily armored SWAT vehicle smashed violently through the opening, completely crushing a stack of wooden crates into splinters.

Standing fearlessly in the open turret of the armored truck, wearing a heavy bulletproof vest over his hospital gown, was my husband.
