Chapter 6 - The Ransom of Spite

I stared at the crude crayon drawing of the black van, my hands shaking so violently I nearly dropped the yellow paper.
My husband had sworn to me over a year ago that he had completely paid off his dangerous gambling debts to the local crime syndicate.
But the incredibly specific logo of a shattered skull with a snake wrapping around it was absolutely undeniable.
Officer Miller looked over my trembling shoulder at the child’s drawing and immediately let out a string of harsh curses.
"That logo belongs to Marcus Vance, the most violent and dangerous extortionist operating in this entire city," Miller explained grimly.
"Why would a heavily armed loan shark kidnap my children instead of my wealthy, manipulative mother?" I asked, thoroughly confused and terrified.
"Because your mother didn't forge those fake custody documents alone," Miller deduced, connecting the sinister dots rapidly.
He quickly explained that Vance heavily controlled the corrupt county clerks who manipulated the official court systems.
My mother had literally hired a ruthless crime boss to legally kidnap my children so her own hands would remain perfectly clean.
"I put a secret GPS tracking tag inside the lining of my eight-year-old's winter coat last year just in case she ever got lost," I suddenly remembered.
I pulled out my phone and frantically opened the hidden tracking application, praying the battery was still alive.
A small, blinking red dot appeared brightly on the digital map, moving slowly toward the industrial shipping district by the freezing river.
Miller did not hesitate for a single second, dragging me quickly back to his unmarked police car.
We sped toward the dark, abandoned warehouses, turning off the headlights completely to avoid detection in the heavy snow.
He parked safely behind a rusted shipping container and pulled his heavy service weapon from its leather holster.
"You stay right here in the car while I go secure the perimeter and call for a tactical SWAT team," he ordered me strictly.
I nodded silently, pretending to agree with his logical, safe plan.
The absolute second he disappeared into the thick shadows, I quietly opened the passenger door and slipped out into the freezing wind.
I followed the blinking red dot on my phone screen until it led me to a massive, heavily rusted metal door on Warehouse Four.
I pulled the heavy door open just enough to squeeze my body quietly into the dark, damp building.
Inside, the massive warehouse was entirely empty except for a solitary folding table illuminated by a single, harsh lightbulb.
My two beautiful daughters were sitting on a dirty mattress in the corner, clutching each other tightly in terrified silence.
I stepped out of the shadows to run to them, completely ready to risk my own life for theirs.
Before I could take a second step, a cold, heavy metal barrel pressed firmly against the back of my head.

"I am so sorry it had to end like this, sweetheart," a familiar, weeping voice whispered in the darkness.
I turned my head slowly and found myself staring directly down the barrel of a loaded gun held by my own father.
