Chapter 7 - The Hostage Situation

Daniel smiled coldly, the bright spotlight casting terrifying shadows across his familiar face.
He looked completely unhinged, his eyes wide and bloodshot from days of running from the people he had stolen from.
Sarah was sobbing hysterically, clutching her sleeping baby tightly against her chest while the gun remained pressed to her head.
Daniel demanded that I open my laptop and transfer the two million dollars immediately, or he would pull the trigger.
He blamed me entirely for this situation, screaming that my disobedience had forced him into these extreme measures.
I slowly pulled the laptop from my bag, resting it gently on the glass coffee table in the center of the living room.
I knew that giving him the money would not save Sarah, because Daniel needed to eliminate all witnesses to survive.
Cole slowly moved his hand toward his holstered weapon, trying to find a clean angle to take Daniel down.
Daniel noticed the subtle movement and aggressively fired a warning shot directly into the ceiling, raining plaster down on us.
He screamed at Cole to drop the gun, threatening to kill the screaming baby next if we did not comply.
Cole reluctantly unclipped his holster, letting his heavy weapon fall onto the expensive hardwood floor.
I opened the laptop and accessed the banking portal, typing with deliberate slowness to buy us precious seconds.
I looked up at Sarah, meeting her terrified, tear-filled eyes, and offered her a tiny, reassuring nod.
I suddenly realized that the baby in her arms was not actually crying despite the deafening gunshot.

The blanket slipped slightly from Sarah's arms, revealing a bundled mass of heavy couch pillows instead of a real infant.
Sarah suddenly threw her entire body weight backward, slamming her head aggressively into Daniel's face with a sickening crunch.
