Chapter 3 - The Confrontation

I backed away from the door silently, my heart hammering fiercely against my ribs.

Megan began slamming the heavy tire iron against the cheap wood, splintering the doorframe with every violent strike.

She screamed that I had ruined their entire family and demanded that I transfer the money back immediately.

I realized with absolute horror that she must have placed a GPS tracking device on my car while I was packing.

The rusty chain lock groaned under the immense pressure as the wooden door finally cracked open.

Megan lunged into the room, swinging the heavy metal bar directly toward my head.

I ducked desperately, and the tire iron smashed into the motel room mirror, sending shards of glass flying everywhere.

I shoved the desk chair into her path, causing her to trip and drop the weapon onto the stained carpet.

Before I could run toward the open door, a tall stranger in a dark leather jacket stepped into the room.

He swiftly grabbed Megan by the back of her coat, hauling her away from me and throwing her against the wall.

He pulled a pair of heavy steel handcuffs from his belt and quickly secured Megan's wrists behind her back.

I grabbed my purse, ready to run from this unknown man who had just effortlessly subdued my violent sister-in-law.

The stranger held up his hands peacefully and told me his name was Cole, a private investigator.

He casually reached into his pocket and pulled out a photograph, tossing it onto the bed next to my laptop.

Cole told me that if I really wanted to understand why Daniel needed that stolen money, I needed to look at the picture.

I stared down at the photograph and saw Daniel smiling brightly, holding a newborn baby next to a beautiful blonde woman.
